Who Are We?
Drive Time consists of the following members:
John Reece – Tenor from Frederick, Md
Dean Martin – Lead from Chambersburg, PA
Dan Tice – Baritone from Bruceton Mills, WV
David Callis – Bass from Oakland, MD
What’s In A Name?
As you can tell by our locations above we travel quite a bit in order to rehearse together. Since the farthest distance between us is about 3 hours we usually meet at a central location in Cumberland, MD
Our story begins with a very special chorus that was put together for the 10th anniversary of 9/11/2001 and a performance that was scheduled at the flight 93 memorial near Shanksville, PA
This mass chorus was assembled from a four state area – Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia and got together once a month in Cumberland, MD from January through September of 2011.
At one of those practices Dan, our fearless Baritone and one of the finest Bass singers I know, asked the four of us individually if we wanted to sing with him and audition as a quartet for the show. John and I had never met Dave but agreed to get together during a break to sing something and see what it sounded like.
Needless to say, we liked the sound and so we spent the next couple of months coming to the practices early to find a song to sing and get it show worthy.
We received many positive comments from our show performances and began to discuss continuing to get together and see if we might be able to compete.
Fast forward to April of 2012 and we’re getting ready for our first JAD contest in Independence Ohio
If you happen to be attending be sure to stop and say hi!
He sings tenor in Drive Time and is a charter member of the Atlantic Harmony Brigade.
He is also a member of the Alexandria Harmonizers, the District of Columbia and Frederick, Maryland chapters.
John lives in Frederick, Md and his bachelor pad is typically filled with loud music and wild women. The rest of us are happily married and wisely steer clear of this scene of debauchery.
Dean Martin is the ‘newbie’ of the group with only 7 hears of Barbershop experience. He lives in Chambersburg, PA with his wife Marlane and two dogs. Although he looks very young his children are all grown and on their own and in fact, Dean is a proud new grandfather for the first time.
Dean has been a member of five different quartets in the last 7 years but none of them will admit having sung with him.
While he has one of the finest Bass voices in the country, he is currently singing Baritone in Drive Time as he lost the cage match with Dave when they were deciding voice parts.
He and his wife Paula recently moved to a sprawling estate in Bruceton Mills, WV where they raise horses and enjoy the company of their 3 dogs.
Although he is as old as dirt, he doesn’t look it and his flowing white hair will often have the ladies swooning during one of his numerous ‘baritone tiddlies’
Dan also directs the Morgantown, WV chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society
David Callis is our awesome Bass and has been a BHS member since 1984, shortly after he was born. He and Dan have sung together in a couple of previous quartets, most notably the 1991 Johnny Appleseed District champs Mason Dixon Line.
With his huge resonant voice and bottomless range, our coaches usually spend half the session complimenting his voice and the remaining time beating the rest of us into shape. Thankfully, humility has never been part of his character so it’s hard for them to puff up his ego more-so than it already is.
Dave lives in Oakland, MD and talks about his wife and children but doesn’t have any names listed on the BHS site – nor have we ever met them so we’re not really sure what to believe. The bald head, obvious facial work (nobody looks that good naturally) and dark glasses would suggest that the witness protection program has been part of his sketchy history.
